Edge Design Institute is an architectural firm with an interest in creating small livable spaces which are at once beautiful and functional. By far one of their most beautiful creations is the Sun Hung Kai/The Wing II Showflat. There is no information about the Showflat on the website, unfortunately, but there are a lot of pictures which are simply gorgeous. Let’s take a look around.
Transparent walls make it possible to see the entirety of the apartment all at once. I am not sure if this is a functional choice for the purpose of showing off the architectural plan of the small space, or if it is an aesthetic choice for creating a sense of openness (Edge Design does favor translucent walls). Either way, it looks ridiculously cool.
Here you can see part of the bedroom and (I believe) the bathroom. Notice how there is no firm division of space; the two rooms flow one into the other.
I am just in love with this bathroom! I think this may be the coolest sink and toilet I have ever seen—no exaggeration. In fact, I had to stare long and hard at this photo to even recognize that as a toilet on the left! It looks more like a work of art than a place to relieve oneself. It just goes to show that no part of a home needs to be entirely utilitarian. Literally any appliance can be beautified in some way.
Purple and yellow are two colors which look really good together—but you don’t see a lot of architects or artists pair them up for some reason. Here they form a mesmerizing contrast. The lighting has been meticulously placed to draw attention to different surfaces and rooms throughout the apartment. In a way, it almost serves as its own form of decoration.
This bedroom is just absurdly cool! Both the low placement of the bed (which is very futon-like) and the general layout and design elements remind me of traditional Japanese interiors. But all the metal, glass and polished stone give the space a modern look.
Here is another bathroom. The same design elements which were used in the first one show up again in this one. Isn’t that sink cool?
Finally, here is one more shot of the bedroom, this time looking out from the bed toward the rest of the apartment.
I’d really love to know more about this flat—like how many square feet it measures, what the kitchen is like, and so forth. Regardless, I can say I’m in love. Be sure to visit Edge Design Institute Ltd. at their website to marvel more at the Sun Hung Kai/The Wing II Showflat as well as the firm’s other amazing designs.
