West Coast Outbuildings is a Canadian company that specializes in building small and modular buildings. The Desolation Sound is a home that they designed with the help of a client who wanted the entire exterior of the home to look like a book. Oh, and the house itself had to be off-grid and modular! No problem for this company. The home was built in sections and transported to the remote location for assembly. And if you really look at it, you’ll see a giant book lying flat.
To give the appearance of pages, corrugated steel was used and the large overhangs mimic the book cover. Large windows and French doors make the house feel homier and also fill the interior with natural light.
When opened, you have an indoor/outdoor space that feels expansive.
Off-grid features were added throughout the home including an extensive solar panel system on the back of the house.
Inside, the home is bright and extremely open with a large combined space serving multiple functions. White walls and cabinets are warmed up by ashen hardwood floors and recessed lighting adds light without being distracting.
A wood burning fireplace is at one end of the room with plenty of space around it for living room furniture without crowding the kitchen or hallway.
The kitchen spreads along the middle of the room with sleek white cabinets and full-sized white appliances for a monochromatic look. A slate gray countertop and stainless-steel backsplash add interest without being overwhelming.
The bedroom area is on the other end of the kitchen with a Murphy bed that folds into the wall for storage.
The entire space behind the kitchen and bedroom wall is one large and open bathroom featuring a massive walk-in shower.
The shower features wood slats that form the floor of the shower and run up the wall. Glass walls keep the water contained without blocking light.
Next to the shower is a slim toilet and vanity area that follows the same white and modern style as the kitchen.
This is definitely one of the more unique floor plans that we’ve seen and we can imagine it being an awesome home for a single person or couple to live in away from the hustle and bustle of the world.
