When 72-year-old Stacy Thompson realized she was nearing the age of no longer being able to work, she wanted to be sure she was self-sufficient so she wouldn’t wind up living in someone’s spare room or being a burden to anyone. So, she bought a “Better Built Barns” shed from Lowe’s and enlisted some friends to help her convert it into her future home.
The process of making the shed a home took a little over a year and around $20,000 but she has peace of mind knowing that she has a place to live out the rest of her life.
The inside of the shed was lined with beadboard to give it a homey feel and she made the ceilings as tall as possible so the home would feel larger than it really is.
A pocket door was put between the living room and bathroom which is always a good idea to save valuable space in a tiny house!
The kitchen is small but has everything she needs including a full-size refrigerator and a small dining table. Cozy touches like the sink curtain and wallpaper make the shed feel like a home.
The stairs to the loft have a sturdy railing and carpet to add safety. Stacy plans on living here until she passes away so she wanted to make sure she could get around easily even as she ages.
In the loft, a skylight was added which is one of the decisions she’s most happy with as she said it brings tons of light into the room and makes you feel like you’re outside.
The loft is actually an extra room for guests while her main bed is downstairs.
The bathroom has a shower stall with low-entry and a pedestal sink. The bead board was continued in here as well.
Outside, a covered deck gives her another “room” which she enjoys while gardening. Although she doesn’t live here full-time yet, she’s working on getting a large garden ready for when she does.
We can’t help but admire this woman and her will to live on her own! She loves her tiny house and even calls it her sanctuary and retreat! She wants nothing more than to live with her beloved dog, garden, and music on her own land and we think she’s created the perfect little home to make that a reality!
