I’ve been playing a lot of Fallout games lately, so naturally I got very excited when I discovered that a company called Green Magic Homes manufactures not only tiny houses, but tiny bomb shelters.
It was not a big leap to do this considering that the company specializes in underground homes to begin with. The bomb shelter designs are actually right around the same size as many other tiny houses, and they can protect the occupant against a range of natural and manmade disasters.
There are two different designs being offered right now.
Underground Shelter – 225 Square Feet
This image shows you the shape of the space as well as how it is accessed. You can also check out a cutaway image below to give you an idea for what the interior space would be like.
The home includes one bedroom and one bathroom as well as an abundance of other cool features (more on that shortly).
Underground Shelter – 250 Square Feet
If you prefer a slightly larger bomb shelter, you can purchase this model which includes an additional 25 square feet.
Instead of a ladder down to the bottom, this one features a spiral staircase.
I can see the appeal of the staircase, but I actually think the ladder is more logical if you are dealing with an emergency. Tight spiral staircases are actually pretty hard to run up and down. It would be faster going up or down the ladder.
I mentioned that these underground bunkers have a lot of cool features. First of all, you may be wondering why the shelters are dome-shaped. This is because this is a stronger shape than a simple box shelter.
Because the shelters are located underground, they are cool and temperate even in hot weather. They all provide protection against rough weather and earthquakes. The hatch door is waterproof, perfect for staying safe in flood conditions. The units include entrance porches and vegetation covers. Each house is energy efficient, requiring only around a third of the energy that a regular home would use.
If you want, you can enhance yours with some additional options like an air filtration system powered by a hand crank to be used in the case of nuclear, biological, or chemical fallout. You also can order CO2 scrubbers. If the air system is switched off or the pipes are blocked, these scrubbers get rid of excess CO2.
If you expect to be living in the shelter for a long time period, you can opt for air quality monitoring, reverse osmosis filters, urban cultivators, and even artificial circadian lighting.
