One of the best things about building a tiny house is customization—you get to build a home that fits your personality. And we do see a lot of unique touches in tiny homes everyday, but this house built by Oli and Holly of New Zealand may just be one of the most unique we have seen!
It’s a lovely house from the outside with huge windows and an eclectic contemporary feel, but looking at the front, you still can’t guess what’s inside.
Let’s step inside and take a look around …
You can see from this shot that the house is a little bit bigger than most tiny houses, but still quite compact. There is a lot of wall space, which is also uncommon.
Here you can get a better look at the kitchen and the stairs. See how the ceiling is a little bit lower in the kitchen than it is in the rest of the house? This allows the floor of the loft to sit lower, which opens up more vertical space in the bedroom—genius.
It also makes the kitchen feel like more of a distinctive “room.”
Below, you can see the bathroom, which is quite lovely:
I really like how the toilet is built into a bench. This not only makes it look nicer with the seat closed, but it also provides for extra storage space to either side. The wood makes this space feel cozy and inviting.
There is a second loft located across from this one. This smaller loft has a flat-screen TV:
But it is how the loft is reached which is going to really blow your mind …
Yes, that IS a climbing wall, just like you’d find in a gym! And yes, it is the ONLY way up to the loft. There are no stairs and no ladder. Here is a closer look:
I know … that is the most awesome thing in the world, is it not? And you didn’t guess, did you? I didn’t think so.
The whole house cost $33,000 to build. It could have been built for less, but with two full-time jobs, the couple didn’t have the time to search for salvaged materials to use.
You can take a video tour of the house on YouTube:
In the video, you can get a much better feel for the space these two have created. They talk about the climbing wall as well. In the video, they emphasize that one of their reasons for building a tiny house was so that they could personalize it, which was why they were willing to go with the bold choice of building a climbing wall instead of another staircase or ladder.
I would love to see more tiny house builders integrate innovative ideas like this which are specific to their personalities and hobbies! Some builders might question the resale value of a home with such an unusual feature, but I would think that for the right buyers, this would be a key selling point.
I was unable to find a personal link for Oli and Holly, but it appears that their story was originally posted at the link I have added below.
