Detroit has been battling the issue of inadequate housing solutions for low-income families for years now. One of their most recent solutions was found in the Cass Community where their social services network raised money to build a community of tiny houses. The first home has now been built and we think it’s a great start for what could be a wonderful new start for these families.
The community will have about twenty-five homes in it ranging from 250 to 400 square feet. And our favorite part is that they won’t be cookie-cutter houses! Each will have its own personality and design. Residents will have to qualify for the homes but once they’re living in the tiny homes, they’ll be paying around $300 in rent a month on a rent-to-own basis.
The first house they built had 300 square feet and it even has a deck off of it for outdoor living.
Inside, the homes are well-designed giving room for dining, living, and a fully functional kitchen.
The dining area is in a nook off of the living room with space for four guests to sit comfortably. A small loft over the table provides room for storage.
The kitchen features a full-sized stove, oven, dishwasher and with tons of storage in the dark cabinets and a small sink and mini-fridge.
The bedroom is in an alcove next to the kitchen with enough space for a full-sized bed to be tucked into.
The tiny house’s bathroom is spacious with a large shower stall, toilet, and storage cabinet with a long sink and medicine cabinet above.
We have a feeling this is the beginning of a beautiful project in Detroit.
