If you go to book a reservation to stay at the LightHotel by Alchemy Architects, you won’t just be checking the current price—you will also be checking the current location.
That’s right, this tiny mobile hotel is on the move. Its location varies throughout Saint Paul and Minneapolis. At the time of this writing, it is in the Creative Enterprise Zone in Saint Paul.
I really like how the architects describe this concept on their site, so I will quote them directly. According to Alchemy, “This transportable hotel room moves as the flow of the city requires, occupying places both celebrated and ignored. The city itself is its lobby.”
Constructed inside a shipping container measuring 8’ x 20’, its spray foam shell provides it with the insulation it needs for Minnesota winters.
The doors and windows are triple glazed, and the floor is heated. For summers, there is air conditioning powered by solar panels. Lighting consists of energy efficient LEDs.
You can see from this photo of the bedroom that the hotel features a sense of humor. Typographic overlays like this one provide information while also doubling as wry décor.
The overall look and feel is very contemporary and minimalist. There is a subtle industrial vibe which is fitting with the shipping container theme.
As tiny as this mobile hotel is, it comes with all the comforts of home.
Here is more of the hotel’s sense of humor on display through the typographic overlay caption “Live Large.”
It is possible to follow along with the hotel and see where it has been parked at this page.
It’s pretty cool thinking you could stay in a comfortable room that you love time and again while visiting Minneapolis and Saint Paul, but that you could see a different part of the city during every trip.
If you would like to book a stay at the LightHotel, you can do so at AirBnB. As of when I am writing this, the rates are very “light” and reasonable, just like the hotel itself. You should also swing by Alchemy Architects to learn more about the LightHotel and other cool projects.
