Tiny house stories always inspire me, but this one is particularly uplifting. When Argentinean immigrant Lulu graduated from school, she realized that she only had a finite amount of time in her life. As a single mother, she wanted to spend time with her young daughter, but the only way to do that was by working part-time—and that meant giving up a typical American lifestyle. She couldn’t afford standard housing options if she wanted to be with her daughter.
Lulu took $4,000 and transformed a shipping container into a magical abode in California. She did this with no building experience and mostly recycled materials from various junkyards. The home is insulated and has a fully functional kitchen.
As the shipping container only measures 160 square feet, Lulu felt her daughter needed more space. To that end, she found a used flatbed trailer and converted that into a bedroom.

Watching the video above, you can take a tour of Lulu’s incredible home. What really makes this tiny house special to me and sets it apart from the rest is that you can see and feel the impoverishment of Lulu’s circumstances. This is not the creation of a woman who simply chose to scale down from a big life. This is the hard work of a woman who already was living on very little and had to make tough choices. From the outside, her home looks like a shanty, but the interior is beautiful and very homey. This is as real as it gets, and it is magnificent!
