Bryan and Catherine are a husband and wife team who have a passion for buying and remodeling properties with their fresh style and budget-friendly ingenuity. One of their latest projects is The Chesterfield Cottage which is a 1,000 square foot home that started as a very humble and tired property just waiting for their creative touch.
The exterior of the home was completely transformed with a fresh coat of paint on the siding and trim. The posts were built up by adding trim and the awnings were removed and window boxes were added. The end result was a home that oozes curb appeal.
In the backyard, a small garage was painted the same navy blue and a sidewalk was poured to connect the building to the driveway.
Inside, the home was painted the same simple white throughout the home with accents painted a light gray to add slight contrast without standing out too much. Hardwood floors are found in most of the rooms except for the new floors in the kitchen.
The living room has large windows that let natural light flood in making the room bright most hours of the day. Wood blinds were hung about six inches above the window to create the illusion of larger windows and tall ceilings.
The arched doorways leading out of the living room add charm to the home. A small faux fireplace was added in the room to create a focal piece. We also love the artwork on the wall! It’s the perfect quote for tiny house lovers! It says, “Love grows best in little houses, with fewer walls to separate. Where you eat and sleep so close together, you can’t help but
communicate. And, if we had more room between us, think of all we’d miss. Love grows best in little houses just like this.”
Upstairs, the dropped ceiling was opened up all the way to reveal the original rafters which were left exposed. Planks were added to the ceiling and painted the same color of the walls. The attic room now feels large and airy thanks to the soaring ceilings and a large window that lets light flood in. The couple also added a custom wood and metal railing to the stair
opening.
The kitchen was completely remodeled and yet it looks vintage and well-loved. Shaker cabinets with pewter hardware were added as well as floating shelves. The brick post was actually cedar block but the couple decided to wrap it in brick veneer for an attractive addition to the kitchen.
The floors are vinyl planks that are able to be grouted and they were arranged in a herringbone pattern for a high-end look.
Silver granite countertops were used next to white subway tile on the backsplash which both pair nicely with the white cabinets and stainless steel appliances.
The original kitchen didn’t have a refrigerator so the couple added one on the long open wall of the kitchen and then designed a wall full of built-ins so the refrigerator wouldn’t look out of place.
A coffee bar was added between the refrigerator and closet and was custom fitted to allow the stools to tuck under and be flush with the cabinets allowing the walkway to be free from obstruction.
This is one talented couple and we love what they did with the Chesterfield Cottage! If you’d like to see more of the remodel and to see their other projects, visit their blog, “Beginning In the Middle” at http://www.beginninginthemiddle.net.
