Ole and Rebecca Hanson run a non-profit in Central Oregon. As owners of Full Circle Outreach Center, their goal has always been sustainable living. Each year, they ensure that 4,000 members of their area community have what they need. Their warehouse up-cycles and redistributes used goods.
After thirteen years of up-cycling to create a better life and better homes for so many Oregonians, Ole and Becca Hanson decided it was time to up-cycle something special for themselves. To that end, they decided they would convert a couple of old Blue Bird school buses. Let’s see what they did!
Here you can see the two school buses parked side by side. They look so ordinary, don’t they? But their interiors are anything but ordinary! The two buses are named Mark and Matthew. One serves as the home, while the other serves as a mobile office!
Here are some shots of the interior. It looks like a lot of the furniture has been repurposed from old palettes or crates. It has a very nice rustic look to it, simple but beautiful and homey. This works nicely with the patchwork quilt on the bed and the muted blue color of the ceiling.
Here is a closer look at one of the rustic shelves.
In these photos, you can see the couples’ dogs relaxing in the house. They look right at home and so cozy!
Here is a shot of the front of the bus, looking toward the door. Here we see a different kind of cabinet, but it fits nicely into the rest of the rustic décor.
As it turned out, Ole and Becca learned so much from the experience of building their own tiny house and office that they have decided to do it again—and this time for others! “We are hoping that we can donate a bus conversion a year to a family in need and make it an even bigger community involved project,” the couple writes.
One of the best things about the tiny-house movement is that it not only sparks the imagination and involves tremendous creativity, but has a strong focus on sustainability. In a world where many people cannot afford a home of their own, tiny houses like these make a lot of sense. Less really is more when it translates to a home for those in need.
Becca and Ole’s project is really amazing, and the fact they want to share it with the world by donating a bus every year is both generous and ambitious. People like Ole and Becca are making a real difference. Be sure to check the link to their blog below for updates!
